01The challenge
Field officers recorded distributions and needs assessments on paper and in spreadsheets, often without connectivity for days. Reports were consolidated by hand at country offices and reached headquarters six weeks later.
Donors increasingly asked for near-real-time evidence of impact. The network had no budget for expensive licences and needed a system field staff could learn in a morning.
02Our approach
We tested three forms with field teams in rural Zambia and Mozambique before writing production code. Every design choice was checked on a low-cost Android phone with no signal.
We built on open-source components to keep running costs low, and trained a small internal team to own the platform once we stepped back.
03What we built
An offline-first Android application for field data capture that synchronises automatically when a signal returns.
A central data platform with automated quality checks and dashboards for country directors and donors.
- Offline-first Android data-capture app
- Sync service tolerant of intermittent connectivity
- Data warehouse with automated quality checks
- Donor and country dashboards
- Internal team trained to run and extend the platform
04The results
What changed.
- From field to headquarters, down from 6 weeks
- 2 days
- Field staff using the app across four countries
- 1,100
- Lower reporting cost per programme
- 71%
05Client view
For the first time, I can see what happened in the field this week and make decisions while they still matter.
